What can we learn from this?
INCOFISH has facilitated more detailed evaluation of landing data at different ports, which has demonstrated that in the 1970s large hake were abundant much further south than previously assumed. The animation shows changes in abundance over four decades. The marked drop in abundance over this relatively short period infers that a serious problem in fish stocks is confronting us right now, and will continue into the future. Can we afford another El Niño?
